Throm

Throm was born a warrior of the Red Wolf Kithoc. His mother was Kyaaa, known to the tribe as one of its greatest archers. His father, as he was told, is the great Serpent Breaker himself.

Throm's earliest memories are of running with the horses and practicing with his bow. He knows nothing of the "civilized" lands except that Kith are not well liked. He is familiar with the rustic towns and cities of the Hrivlyggdor forests, however. Throm tries to be on his best behavior since he does not know the customs of this strange land and people.

Throm has come to White Plume Mountain because he undertook a quest and swore an oath to break a dragon as his father did, and bring back its horn to use for a bow. He has traveled many leagues, and saw the white smoke pouring from the mountain. Knowing that dragons can breath fire or gas, Throm naturally assumed there was one inside, and headed toward it to find the beast.

Throm also searches for a most rare and prized axe like no other. Frostrazor is a mighty weapon forged of solid ice. The weapon is as cruel and cold as ice, and the haft is wrapped in the skin and hair of a snow serpent. It lies in an icy cave in the high Wintercrown Mountains, well-guarded by peril of beast and weather.

Red Wolf Kithoc

The Red Wolf Kithoc, like most Kith clans, is a tribe of fierce warriors. Men and women are equally respected as warriors; cleaning, feeding, and other so-called "woman's work" is done by slaves taken from battle. The Sternmen are slower to anger than many other nomads, and easier to placate, though they take great offense if anyone doubts or challenges their physical abilities. They mistrust flashy displays of magic, feeling that its proper place is in aiding allies rather than striking directly at foes.

Red Wolves berserkers are born through ritual, thrown into pits in the old way until they emerge as berserkers. Red Wolf berserkers are naturally considered the champions of the kithoc, and are made to run with the horses instead of upon them, to build their stamina. They are trained to use larger bows and heavier weapons than can easily be wielded from horseback. Each berserker, when he comes of age, chooses a weapon to master; many choose greatsword or greataxe. They are accorded great respect among the tribe as the most cunning and savage warriors.

Sorcerers and shamans, though few, are present in the tribe. They are respected for their wisdom and magic. Girls who show magical talent are trained as sorcereresses, while boys with the same talent are educated in the ways of the shaman of the Serpent Breaker. Neither role is considered as prestigious as that of the warrior, but if a child is found to have magical potential, he is expected to fulfill his duty to the tribe. Pregnant women are accorded the same status as sorcerers.

The tribe is led by a tribal leader, or noyan, who is the strongest male warrior in the clan. The noyan is chosen anew each year through a trial of strength of all eligible men. The trial takes place in the fall, as the weather grows cold; though a similar ceremony takes place if the noyan should die. It is said the strength of the new noyan will carry the tribe through the cold winter and into the spring. All of the sorceresses are considered the wives of the noyan. When a new noyan is chosen, he must choose one as his first wife. The senior shaman and his first wife advise him as he leads the tribe.

Each child in the tribe is given a birth name, typically a monosyllabic grunt such as Hraal or Greeya. When the child comes of age, he must prove himself an adult through some rite of passage. Red Wolves are exempt from this requirement, as they are already considered to have proven themselves. However, after a child becomes an adult, he may earn a second name through some heroic act. A second name is a great source of pride to a Red Wolf. (The noyan, Brogg Shieldbreaker of the Red Wolves, earned his name by entering single combat with the commander of one of the Kurgan armies. With a single blow of his sword, Brogg shattered his shield and struck him dead.)
